Future Invitational cricket launched in West Demerara
The Wales Future Invitation cricket competition was launched last Saturday at the Wales Community Development Centre.
The 40-overs knock-out competition involves eight second-division teams namely: Wales, Western United, Players, New Windsor, Independence, All Youths, Goed Fortuin and Lagrange.
It has been sponsored by Ideal Food Products, which is the distributors of Future Juice, Country Dairy among other exotic beverages.
The tournament was organized to provide more playing opportunities for teams in the West Demerara area and encourage involvement at the community level.
The final is expected to be played in a festive atmosphere involving maximum community participation. There will be a heavy presence of the sponsor’s products at the final which is expected to attract a large turnout. The winner of the tournament will pocket $25,000 and a trophy.
Meanwhile, New Windsor got the better of Western United at their match played at Wales last Saturday.
New Windsor, opting to bat first, after winning the toss, piled up 156 all out in their allotted 30 overs. Trevor Kedum and Zaheer Razack contributed 39 and 28 respectively.
Ronald Stanley grabbed three wickets for 22 runs in his six overs for Western United. Western United in reply failed to ride on a scintillating 59 contributed by all rounder Fenton Persaud.
Persaud’s innings was decorated with exquisite square-cuts and well-timed drives through the cover and long-on. The only batsman who attempted to offer support to Persaud was Floyd Allen who made 17.
The pick of the bowlers for New Windsor were Captain Vijay Plummer who picked up 3 wickets for 18 in his five overs and Zafal Khan who picked up three for 16 in five overs. La Grange and Independence have already chalked up wins in the competition.
