Johnson’s heroics fail to save GCC in back-to-back games

West Indies ODI left-handed batsman Leon Johnson hit back-to-back half-centuries on Friday and yesterday but his heroics failed to save GCC from defeat in their Gafson’s 20/20 first round match against Lusignan and their Pepsi 40-overs first division encounter against GNIC yesterday.
At the Lusignan ground on Friday Harrinarine Hira hit an unbeaten 50 and got support from the unrelated Deosarrans; Krishna (37) and Surajpaul (30) as Lusignan reached 151-6 off their allotted 20 overs.
Medium pacer Paul Bevon took 2-32 for GCC who could only reach 147-7 when their overs expired despite a brilliant 60-ball 90 with six fours and four sixes from the 21-year-old Johnson who has three fifties from eight first-class games for Guyana.
Former Guyana under-19 opener Robin Bacchus made 18 as Rajendra Naikbarran took 2-26 to give Lusignan their second win from as many matches after they beat New Aqua Line in their first match.
And yesterday, Berbice and Guyana first-class all-rounder Royston Crandon was left eight short of his maiden ton in Demerara’s cricket after he had taken 4-27 with his off-spin as GNIC got past host GCC by four wickets.
The 25-year-old Crandon, who scored a century on his regional One-Day debut against the Windward Islands last year, got support from Richard Chitura (2-29) as GCC were restricted to 180-8 off 40 overs despite Johnson’s undefeated 61.
Bacchus (19), former national under-19 player Vishal Singh (18) and Bevon (17) were the only other batsmen to offer token resistance for GCC before Crandon smashed seven fours and two sixes in his belligerent 92. Former Guyana fast bowler Rayon Griffith supported with 22.
Meanwhile Everest got a walk over from GDF on Friday in their Gafson’s 20/20 match scheduled for Everest after the soldiers failed to show up for battle.
