DEAR EDITOR, It was long awaited but, nevertheless, we have finally got what we needed in Berbice, and moreso Guyana as a whole.
The New Skeldon Sugar Modernisation Plant is now on stream, and is most welcomed by the people of this country. This new national asset is one of the most modernised sugar factories in the world. Lucky are we to have it in our own country.
There were many talks about this being a “white elephant” and that it will never become a reality; but last week, when I saw the Minister of Agriculture visiting the plant and seeing it in operation, I was overwhelmed with joy, as a citizen of this country, to see this new factory pushing steam into the air.
This modernised investment will be seen as the main income earner or “economic gear box” of our country. The years of waiting and our patience are now proving to be fruitful and rewarding. Old people does seh “patience is virtue”.
I was also happy to hear that the Chinese experts will be spending some additional time in our country, on site, to train our people to fully take over the factory. I wish to extend sincere congratulations to the Chinese and their Government for this.
It was also mentioned that the factory will continue to do the test runs to ensure that every single aspect of the system is functioning to its fullest capacity and will not hamper production. This is also very applauding.
I wish to congratulate the entire team, GuySuCo’s officials, the Chinese delegation, members of the Government, and all those persons who would have contributed in whatever way to make this Guyanese dream a Guyanese reality.
