DEAR EDITOR,
I was very pleased to read the letter by Ms. Williams, Youth Parliament Minister of Finance in SN of 4th October 2008. It is good to see young people getting involved and engaging in the issues within the nation.
However, having read her short letter, I was unable to gain any insight into whether she had studied the history and development of the PNC, to enable her to make such profound statements.
Since she is only 21, her knowledge of the history and development of the party would have to be based on what she has heard or read, and her opinions shaped by whom she has been hearing from and which books she has read.
While I am sure that Messrs. Alexander and McAllister have, like thousands of others, made contributions to the party, her suggestion that the party will end with their departure highlights the emotions of youth, inexperience and lack of knowledge.
More significantly, it overlooks the many people who, over decades (before she was born), contributed and sacrificed and continue to make sacrifices for the party.
These people may not be in the limelight like the two gentlemen she mentions; or, in fact, even have such ambitions, but it is these silent people behind the scenes who are the backbone of the party.
These people ask for very little in return, do not fight for positions, or seek recognition, but rather have the attitude of ‘how best can I serve the party I support’.
It is these kinds of people who have always held the PNC together, and it is these dedicated people who will keep the party alive.
So, Ms. Williams, I hope that this serves as a useful lesson in your aspiration for higher office. It is not always those who seek the spotlight who are the ones making the greatest contribution. Never underestimate the power of the ‘labourers’ I wish you well. Shyla Lincoln
