GFC beat Sunburst Camptown for third placeBy Franklin Wilson
Fruta Conquerors F.C. led by the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper Colin Edwards, Most Valuable Player Paul Bobb and Highest Goal Scorer Manasseh Primo claimed the 2008 DeSinco Group of Companies Under-18 Football Championship with a 3-1 whipping of Alpha United on Saturday evening at the Tucville ground.
Using home advantage to excellent effect, Conquerors, which ended as the only unbeaten team of the competition, came from a goal down and a 1-1 first half to defeat the Andrew Murray led Alpha.
Georgetown Football Club (GFC) also erased a one goal deficit to beat Sunburst Camptown in the third place match up.
Devon Moseley had given Camptown the lead after 18 minutes of exchanges, an advantage they enjoyed until the 47th minute when Gavin Whyte evened the score for GFC. The winner was converted by Marlon Johnson in the 66th minute.
The championship match though, was much more competitive, at least for the first half as the two best sides of the competition, which was played using the league format in the group stages, which attracted ten teams, did allow the other to dominate proceedings.
Alpha it was who were to jump ahead in the 43rd minute. Up to that point Conquerors’ keeper Edwards was enjoying a good half but was found guilty of venturing off his line too far and Andrew Murray, used his experience to make the opposition pay as he skillfully and confidently placed the ball into the back of the nets from an angle at the first post, the two defenders who were settling in goal did not have a chance to stop the shot.
Two minutes before Alpha’s go ahead strike, Primo was presented with the opportunity of scoring but put the ball straight to goalie Alex Murray. But the Fruta side would soon make amends after falling behind, urged on by their vociferous supporters.
On the stroke of halftime, Primo was again in the front line collecting the ball outside the box on the right side and worked his way into the area where he was brought down.
MVP Paul Bobb stepped up to take the penalty and beat Murray with a well executed kick to his left. When the ball was spotted to restart play the whistle was sounded for the end of the first half.
The second half saw sustained efforts by both teams to wrest the advantage, but it was Conquerors who looked the hungrier of the two sides and their ability to play as a team saw them to victory.
Goalkeeper Edwards made a blunder in the early stages of the half where he failed to gather the ball cleanly almost costing his side and was replaced almost immediately by Yonick Edwards.
Both teams made substitutions at regular intervals but it was Conquerors who would benefit from the intervention of fresh legs. They were rewarded with a corner in the 60th minute resulting from a crossed ball by Fruta which the defender spliced over the goal line in an attempt to clear the ball.
The resulting kick saw the ball not being cleared cleanly and it fell into the path of Primo in the six yard box, he accepted it with delight banging it into the back of the nets for the go ahead goal.
Alpha’s GK Murray did not enjoy a good night with a number of indecisive moves which cost his side.
The third goal for Conquerors, where Primo again featured when he squared the ball into the box from the left side, saw Richard Brotherson’s shot in the 76th minute, which should have been taken, passed through the hands of Murray and into the nets to the delight of Conquerors and the total dismay of Murray and his teammates.
That effectively sealed the title for Fruta Conquerors who continues to enjoy a good year at the junior level.
Sunburst Camptown was voted the most disciplined team.
DeSinco Group of Companies Personnel Manager Nathalie Mars, who was on hand to assist in the distribution of prizes, complimented Fruta Conquerors for winning the Second DeSinco Championship which was organized by the Georgetown Football Association.
The top four teams also received a number of footballs, shin guards and boots as part of their prizes. New Building Society (NBS) supplied all the water for the tournament.
