Ramadan, a month of fasting and prayer for Muslims worldwide, ended yesterday with the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was among the worshippers who converged at the Peter’s Hall Masjid on the East Bank of Demerara.
Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid is a very auspicious occasion for Muslims and was said to have been first celebrated by the Prophet Muhammad in AD 624 after winning the battle of Badr.
Eid is celebrated on the first day of Shawaal, a day which Muslims believe was specially chosen by Allah and recognised by Muslims on the accomplishment of Ramadan.
Prime Minister Hinds extended greetings on behalf of Guyana’s Head of State Bharrat Jagdeo and commended Muslims for their devotion and supplication during the Ramadan period.
He said fasting is a common trait of all religions as it seeks to demonstrate and establish the supremacy of the spirit over bodily needs and material comforts.
“We emerge from fasting, a period of voluntary self-denial, with greater empathy with those who have little for whom fasting is not a matter of choice but indeed we should emerge from fasting with a greater sense of generosity to all,” Mr. Hinds said.
