On a windy and serene Thursday evening, the 2008 season of the East Demerara

Football Association (EDFA) kicked off with the Mackeson Senior League at the Plaisance Community Centre ground, the first time in the history of the Association that their senior League was kicked off under lights.
Following a colourful march past of the nine participating teams the young Buxton United side with the oldest member at age 22, all the others under 20, making a grand debut at the senior level.
They dismissed the challenge of Black Stallion of Vryheid’s Lust 6-1 led by double strikes from multi talented national under-19 cricketer Clive Andries and strike partner Derrick Hatton.
The feature match up of the evening did not bring much joy for the supporters of the host village team as they lost to Ann’s Grove 2-0, Gavin Adams engineering the win by hitting in the brace.
The night’s opening clash saw the young Buxton United side, one of two coming from the village, the other being Bakewell Buxton Stars, taking the fight to the seasoned Black Stallion.
The Vryheid’s Lust unit did not have an answer for the speed and fitness exhibited by Buxton whose coach Linden France at the end of the game said, while they won, he was not satisfied with their technical performance because they allowed themselves to be brought to the level of their opponents. He acknowledged that there is lots of room for improvement.
Their first goal was netted by Michael Phyll who pounced on some rather loose play by the Black Stallion defence who committed the cardinal sin of passing the ball across the goal while it was in the box. Phyll was alert enough to intercept the play to rock the nets.
But six minuets later from a free kick 20 yards out, Black Stallion were able to equalise through Wesley Tyndall.
But there after it was all Buxton United, Hatton netted the first of his brace in the 20th minute and completed same one minute before full time.

Andries scored in the 42nd and 50th with Colwin Barnwell accounting for goal number five in the 87th.
The home team Plaisance was never allowed to settle by Ann’s Grove who took full points with goals either side of play by Gavin Adams. He netted in the 21st and 67th minute.
Earlier, Guyana Football Federation President Colin Klass was on hand to deliver the feature opening remarks and also did the ceremonial kick off of the ball to get the season underway.
In his brief he challenged the teams to take the level of the sport to a higher and competitive one. He also urged them to play fair and be focused in order to achieve which also means that discipline must also be part of the mix.
Sponsors Ansa Mc al Trading also came in for high praise from the GFF boss who also encouraged other corporate entities operating on the East Coast to partner the Association in bringing off competitions which provides a clean means of exercise and entertainment for the youths and even senior players.
EDFA President Aubrey Hutson also delivered brief remarks. He disclosed that he was proud of the teams and is hoping that one day the Plaisance ground will be transformed into a state of the art facility.
The nine teams competing for the top prize of $250,000 are Ann’s Grove, Bakewell Buxton Stars, Buxton United, Black Stallion, Determinators, Golden Stars, Plaisance, Victoria Kings and defending champions BV/Triumph United.
Competition is expected to continue this afternoon with one match. Victoria Kings will be at home to Mahaica.
Tomorrow’s lone fixture brings together Golden Grove and Buxton Stars at the BV ground. Both matches will kick off at 16:00hrs.
