TORONTO, Canada (CMC) – Former Guyana batsman Sunil Dhaniram has regained Canada’s captaincy for the forthcoming Tri-Nation series involving West Indies and Bermuda in the Greater Toronto Area next week.
The 39-year-old middle-order batsman and left-arm spinner led Canada in Intercontinental Cup matches against the United Arab Emirates, Kenya and Namibia last year before being replaced by the younger Zubin Surkari this summer.
He is Canada’s fifth captain this year after Surkari suffered a shoulder injury on his first day on the job last July.
Dhaniram, who represented Guyana in 12 first-class matches before migrating to Canada in 1995, is one of three West Indian-born players in the 14-member squad.
The others are vice-captain Abdool Samad and medium-pacer Eion Katchay who made his Canadian debut last month in the ODI home series against Bermuda. They were both born in Guyana.
The Tri-Nation series will be staged at the Maple Leaf cricket ground in King City.
Bermuda face Canada on Monday then play Chris Gayle-led West Indies two days later. The final will be on August 24.
Daryl Hair of Australia and Roger Dill of Bermuda will officiate in the matches while Ranjan Madugalle as the match referee.
