The Solid Waste Management of the Mayor and City Council has tightened its grip on a disposal service operating on the West Coast and West Bank of Demerara.
On Wednesday night, a constable attached to the Princes Street, Werk-en-Rust incinerator caught a garbage truck illegally dumping refuse at the landfill site.
A source from the Solid Waste Department told this newspaper that the garbage truck is attached to the S & H Disposal Service.
Kaieteur News was reliably informed that the disposal service is not registered with the Mayor and City Council and has not been paying dumping fees at the Mandela dump site.
This, the source said, resulted in the illegal dumping of waste at the landfill site, as every disposal service has to be licensed.
The landfill site operates from 07:00hrs to 17:00hrs. However, the workers there still work beyond the established hours in order to facilitate late dumping by some of the disposal services, who have been authorised to do so.
The source said that the illegal dumping by the S & H Disposal Company caused a lot of problems for the operators at the landfill site. This company dumped waste in a haphazard manner, which can at times result in fires.
In addition the illegal dumping costs the Solid Waste Management. When the refuse is being dumped randomly, the department has to pay a bulldozer to heap it properly.
The truck has since been seized by the Solid Waste Department.
Manager of the S & H Disposal Service, Sheik Haniff, said that a few weeks ago, the company was informed by the Solid Waste Department that it was banned from dumping garbage at the landfill site, because it did not pay up their fees.
Haniff explained that since then, the company has not been utilising the facility. However, according to the manager, a new driver for the disposal truck, which was eventually seized, was employed on Wednesday by the company, and apparently he was not informed by the management that they are not authorized to dump refuse there.
Haniff noted that his company has never been involved in such an incident before.
He said that today the company is slated to pay off its dues to the Solid Waste Department and should resume work as usual.
Kaieteur News understands that there are other vehicles that dump their garbage at the site during the nights and these are also not authorised to do so.
This is something, according to the source, that the Solid Waste Department is trying to move away from, so that some order can be brought to the landfill site.
