National rugby coach, Alton Agard has given assurance that both the male and female rugby squads will be ready for the upcoming North American and West Indies Rugby Union (NAWIRU) Sevens tournament.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Agard, who is in charge of the female unit, said that both teams are currently in the initial stages of preparations for the event slated for the Bahamas from October 25–26.
“We have named 20 players for the female squad and 33 for the male squad [and] by next month, we should be in a position to identify the 14 players that will make up the final teams,” Agard said.
According to the national coach, the men’s competition is set up as a Rugby World Cup qualifier with the top two teams advancing to the International Rugby Board’s marquee Sevens event in Dubai, next year.
On the other hand, Agard said that the women will play in the inter–Caribbean women’s competition. He said that their tournament is not a World Cup qualifier but will occur simultaneously with the men’s contest.
“We are just working on fitness right now. Later this month we will have practice matches,” Agard informed, adding that the women train on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the men on all other days.
