The fate of Ralph Ramkarran

Ralph Ramkarran’s fate at the recent PPP congress was being speculated upon even before the congress, and observers were already aware that the long knives were out.
This is what Ricky Singh, one of the region’s most respected journalists and a knowledgeable observer of the Guyanese political scene, said on Sunday, August 3, in his column in the Sunday Chronicle before the election results were known or available:
“Campaign Manoeuvres
Quietly, but not unknown to the more politically conscious across national party lines, campaign manoeuvrings , not without a good dose of invectives and ridicule, have already begun, as party insiders, especially those with the influence of State power, seek to elevate their favoured potential nominees and downgrade the importance of others.
While the official results of the composition of the Central Committee may give a reasonable indication of those perceived to be more popular with delegates — usually gauged from the top dozen or so — it would be a mistake to rule out other old and battle-hardened candidates who were chosen for the new Central Committee.
Assessments of potential nominees can be expected with the end of Congress today, and as the country begins to think more seriously about the future leadership of the incumbent PPP and governance of Guyana at least three years from now.
One potential candidate whose inclusion for consideration will be very difficult to ignore is Ralph Ramkarran, who has acquired quite an impressive profile in the higher echelons of the PPP over the years, having served on the various Elections Commissions; and with his repeated unchallenged election as Speaker of Parliament, was chairman of the country ‘s Constitution Reform Commission”.
If Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo could have succeeded to the Presidency from the background that he had, Mr. Ramkarran has every possibility of doing the same with an even more distinguished record, as noted by Rickey Singh.
