Some twenty (20) participants, including Trinidadian Kamaria McLeod, have registered to participate in the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) organised International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Paralympic Level One Coaching and Women’s Programme which was declared open yesterday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Course which will run from August 9-13 will be conducted by Argentine Alejandra Cabaglio, who was expected to arrive in Guyana last evening after experiencing a flight delay.
According to a release from the Organisers, participants will be required to meet certain criterion to receive the ITTF & PTT (Paralympic Table Tennis) Certificate and among those are: full attendance at all sessions including practical activities.
Coaches will also be mandated to offer a 5-10 minutes presentation which must be done in a satisfactory manner to be eligible for the certificate. It was also disclosed that 30 hours of practical coaching must be completed with a minimum of 5 hours assigned to athletes with disabilities whether supervised or not.
All ITTF Courses are accumulative which includes 3 hours Community Leader Course, 6 hours School Teacher Course, 12 hours Club Coach Course, 24 hours ITTF Level 1 Coaching Course and 30 hours PTT Level 1 Course.
Coaches who do not attend the full 24 hours or attend a similar amount hours and are unsatisfactory in any area will be awarded the appropriate lesser certificate (club coach, school teacher, community leader) providing they meet the required time.
Meanwhile, McLeod speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that her attendance was facilitated by the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association and she was always eager to grasp the opportunity to become an accredited coach since back home a lot of female players are entering the sport.
McLeod also holds a diploma at the Intermediate level in table tennis which she obtained in 2005 at a Latin American Table Tennis Association / ITTF Course in her native land. She was a former national player for Trinidad and Tobago.
The course is set to continue today, at the same venue.
