Some forty-three school boys and girls benefited from the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Clinic which ended yesterday after two weeks, at the National Gymnasium.
The participants aged between 8-17 years were taught the fundamentals of the game along with being exposed to classes in Mathematics and English Language for the duration of the clinic which lasted from July 28-August 8, but had to be cut short due to the ongoing repairs to the facility in preparation for Carifesta X scheduled to begin shortly.
According to Vice-President of the club Linda Whyte, who conducted sessions in Maths and English Language, other resource personnel were Mark Agard and Hollisworth Casey who taught the children the rudiments of the game of basketball.
The event which is in its third year saw a marked decrease in participation and according to Whyte this was due to the late attempt to get the information into the schools before the close for the holidays.
However, she stated that the clinic was a success and the club has every intention of continuing along a similar path next year where hopefully with additional sponsorship and support from the corporate community, the participants will receive more lucrative prizes for their efforts.
GT&T’s representative Rhonda Johnson in brief remarks to the students advised them to stay in school because of the importance of education goes hand in hand with sports. Each student was awarded with certificates of participation and Cellink Plus jerseys.
Meanwhile, other sponsors who added their support to the venture included Demerara Distillers Ltd, Scotia Bank, Edward B. Beharry, Ministry of Tourism and Mayor Hamilton Green.
Making the presentation of certificates to the participants were Scotia Bank representatives Chikere Stewart, Dionne Cox and Antonette Andries.
