DEAR EDITOR,
The joint promotions of Banks Beer and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is a symbol of the hypocrisy which governs our social attitudes to drinking in Guyana.
The Ministry of Health has started to talk about reducing alcohol consumption, while the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police have recognised the links between alcohol consumption and crime.
Meanwhile, the Ministry responsible for Youth is joining in a promotion which has its base, the rewarding of more alcohol consumed by issuing free tickets to a CARIFESTA event.
What message is that Ministry sending to the young people that it has to liaise with – that it is okay for some to binge on beer and not others?
Wouldn’t it be better for Banks Beer to join with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to reduce alcohol consumption in the society, and especially among young people.
How about two free tickets to the event for every beer substituted with a non-alcoholic Banks DIH beverage? Vidyaratha Kissoon
