DEAR EDITOR,
Another year of the passing of the great Mohammed Rafi is with us again. It brings with it the memories and achievements of the greatest male playback singer of all times. He sang over 30,000 songs — that alone speaks for itself.
The quality and value of his singing to the film industry is immeasurable. The tone and modulation of his voice fits all actors. Sometimes it is virtually indistinguishable from the actors themselves.
It was observed by one writer that Rafi was “The Supreme Master of Indian Singing” but I would say that he was “The Master of Singing”. In his own inimitable style, he thrilled millions around the world.
Another great asset is that he could have sung his songs in a different way during his stage performances. He added his own touch which is marvelous to listen to. Rafi will long be remembered by generations yet unborn when they hear his songs.
It is unthinkable to compare Rafi with any other singer but we are still fortunate to have Lata Mangeshkar. I also have great respect for Sam Cooke. Like Sir Garfield Sobers in cricket, Rafi will remain the greatest singer of all times. Prame Kumar
