Canada-based race car driver Shawn King reckons that this Sunday’s Guyana Motor racing and Sports Club Meeting will see him offer a more competitive challenge to fellow competitors in Group 4.
King, who drives a turbo-chassis Mazda RX7, told Kaieteur Sport that he has made some major changes to the machine which he believes, will help him be more competitive and also provide him with the opportunity for the first time to be on equal footing with his rivals.
“For this Meeting, I’ve made some major changes to the car among which was changing the engine from a 12A to a 13B, bringing me on par with the other drivers, while I had my flywheel custom built,” King revealed.
He said that those alterations will certainly increase his competitiveness since he was always running at around 130HP less that the other drivers and that placed him at a great disadvantage which presented him with little chance of beating them.
He, however, conceded that because of the level of sponsorship being offered to the ‘big guns’ like Andrew King and Mark Vieira, they are still the ones to beat.
“These guys are top class performers with vast amount of experience so I reckon they will be tough to beat.”
He said he will also be using the Meeting to prepare to represent Guyana at the upcoming Round Two of the Caribbean Series scheduled to be staged next month at Bushy Park in Barbados.
“I’m usually a team guy and I will do whatever it takes to ensure that Guyana defeat the rest of the Caribbean,” King said.
A true lover of the sport, King who travels to most of the Meetings in Guyana as well as those held in other Caribbean territories disclosed that he has a penchant for Bushy Park which he described as a track that requires more handling than horsepower. “I actually do better on that track than at the South Dakota Circuit so I’m eager to do well there.”
Speaking on the rapid development the sport has witnessed recently, King said that the improvement has been swift and commended the work of the current executive.
“Presently, the level is so high anyone could win and that is the way it ought to be, very competitive.”
The driver, who is self-sponsored, indicated that the investment he has made is really to gain some prominence and hopefully attract some level of sponsorship.
He expressed thanks to Laparkan Shipping for their support in assisting him in getting the car here free of cost.
