Leakage is the Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI) biggest and most chronic problem. So said Karan Singh, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GWI.
According to him, as GWI repairs, and keeps repairing leaks, additional leaks continue to appear.
The GWI Leak Repair Programme, estimated to be worth almost $1 billion, is approximately 35 per cent completed. While repairs are ongoing, Singh explained that one of the biggest problems was sourcing a contractor to carry out the repair work in affected areas.
Singh highlighted that “We depend on GPL (Guyana Power and Light); when the power goes off the frustrated customer goes and breaks the main.”
Instead of tampering with the main, Singh advises consumers to invest in a small reservoir so that when the power goes they can still have access to water.
“If you can help GWI by doing that, you would be surprised to know how better a service you can get,” explained Singh.
The GWI Leak Reduction Programme is one that is ongoing.
