DEAR EDITOR,
When I read the article under the caption “Police probe fraud at the N/A court registry – official mysteriously proceeds on leave, entry page missing,” published on Friday 11th July, 2008, in your newspapers I was not surprised at the allegations made by Adrian Anamayah, attorney-at-law.
I am not aware of a “massive fraud at Land Registry”. I know that a transfer was filed by one Shondell Yearwood to P. Heeralall.
According to the land registry clerk, she is a woman in her 50’s and weighs about 200lbs. On proceeding to check the transfer he noticed there were no witnesses on the document.
Ms. Dhanela Chandiprasad, Adrian Anamayah’s clerk was in the registry and he asked her how come they were filing transfers without witnesses and he requested her to sign as one.
This practice is not unusual for if he sees a lawyer’s clerk in or out of the registry, he would tell them their documents have been queried.
When the police was called in, the land registry clerk was there at work and he visited the police station as requested, so he did not “mysteriously proceed on leave as reported by you.
He applied for four days leave from the 8th July 2008 to the 11 July 2008, both days inclusive and this was applied for on the 19th June, 2008 and approved by me.
The police was also informed of this by the clerk himself. According to your article, the entry page is missing. Nothing is missing; everything is as it should be.
As for the documents in question, these were returned to Ms. Yearwood as they were not recorded in the presentation book and property register; this is standard procedure.
Land Registry is sharing space with Deeds Registry and the lawyers and their clerks know that Land Registry records are easily accessible to everyone for Deeds Registry is a thoroughfare.
I spoke to Ms. Chandan, the acting supervisor, but I am not in charge of Deeds Registry therefore she pays no attention to what I say.
At one time she even stopped receiving Land Registry documents because the cashier who is a Deeds Registry employee did not inform me that she did not have a bank deposit book.
Ms. Chandan informed her superior and not me, who am in charge of Land Registry. I brought this to the attention of Deeds Registry Permanent Secretary Ms. Mitra Ali.
There are other transfers which are pending for the Anamayahs but the registry clerk and I have found them (transfers) incorrect. I will not sign the transfers until they are legally correct.
