Can the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) do something about the misadministration of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG)?
Athletes are going through a stressful period with this current body, which is why there are not many senior and junior athletes competing.
Our level of performance can’t rise if this continues. For instance, you will merely find one or two senior athletes in the AAG senior trials amongst a host of juniors.
Sometimes the seniors can’t even compete because only two athletes showed up for a race. They (AAG) need to treat us better, realizing that without the athletes there will be no competition.
Another major issue is their selection process. They are doing a bad job with that; you can find them sending athletes to international meets before sending them to regional meets.
Some years back, I can remember them sending Colin Mercurius to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships when they didn’t send him to the Carifta Games.
In 2006, Dennis Horatio was the first Caribbean athlete to cross the finish line at CAC but the AAG didn’t send him to Carifta in Trinidad the next year. Later in the year, the AAG sent him to the Pan American and South American Games.
It looks as though the AAG just wanted to send these athletes to meets. Even their selection for this year’s World Junior Championships is questionable. The AAG is sending an athlete that doesn’t even reach the final in meets in Guyana.
Incidentally, all the athletes that get the exposure are from Police Sports Club. It looks as though the AAG is doing that club a favor. Concerned Athlete
