Meakins defeats Fernandes in St. Lucia
The Subaru St Lucia Squash Open saw some exciting matches being played as the top players had to compete in a knockout to stay on top.
In the ladies division, world ranked Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana was defeated in an amazing round robin match going to five before the winner was determined.
Despite an amazing effort, Meakins was no match for Fernandes who took the first two games 9/4 9/2. Then the tables turned and Meakins who realized this was the do or die game and was behind 4/6 made a concerted effort digging deep to turn it around.
It was at that point she moved ahead to take the game 9/5. Meakins again went into the fourth game with a goal to make the games level two each.
At the end of that game Meakins had taken it 9/6 achieving her goal. In the fifth game, Meakins appeared to dominate the game right from the start and with an aggressive mode closed the match at 9/2.
The ladies will meet up again this afternoon as they play the main playoff for the ladies open and it will be another eagerly contested match.
In the Men’s plate, eight men were entered in the knock out:- Dominique Rivers of St Lucia defeated Thierry Verson of Martinique 9/2 9/8 9/3, Vincentian Bradley Glasgow defeated Peter Bryne of the UK 9/0 9/1 9/2.
In an all St. Lucian encounter David Piper defeated Chris Gardinier 10/9 9/2 9/4, while in the final St. Lucian encounter, Randolph Khan defeated Frederick Sweeney by a walk over.
In the Men’s main open Vincentian Kevin Bailey was no match for Guyanese #1 Kristian Jeffrey, who took the match easily 9/2 9/1 9/2; St Lucia’s #1 Charlie Sonson defeated Vincentian Shane Slater 9/7 9/6 9/6; defending champ Josh Pinard of Trinidad defeated Barbadian Steven Miller 9/0 9/2 9/4 and in an all Guadeloupe encounter 14 year-old Pierric Girou was defeated by his Coach Joycelyn Martin 9/1 9/7 4/7 9/0.
Semi-final matches in the men’s division for both plate and main draw were fixed for last evening, while some finals were set for today.
