Guyana Under-19 Ruggers intensify preparations : Giles a good addition to the team – Adonis
Head Coach of the Guyana National Under-19 Rugby squad Laurie Adonis, said that even though the team’s preparations was hampered by most of the players being engaged in the CXC examinations, he still expects them to perform well at the NAWIRA Championship in Barbados.
Adonis informed that the team which has been training for the past two months is expected to depart Guyana on Friday for the event scheduled to be staged from July 5-12.
The twenty-two man squad will be named today and Adonis will have as his assistant the experienced Alton Agard.
Adonis stated that the inclusion of England-based Rupert Giles has been a real asset to the team since he has brought a degree of experience to the squad which is relatively inexperience with only nine to ten players returning from last year’s unit.
“Most of the guys have only been involved in the game for just over one year, but I still expect them to go all the way,” the Coach said.
“We started out real slow, but every week we saw some level of improvement as we progressed and to my mind they’ve really impressed since then.”
Guyana ended runners-up to Jamaica despite playing unbeaten, losing to the eventual champions in a kick-out in the Cayman Islands last year.
The squad played a practice match against a Select Team yesterday.
