Government has placed a ban on the importation of Pit Bulls, following several severe attacks on citizens.
Government sources have also confirmed that a temporary ban has also been placed on the importation of the Rottweiler breed.
Previously, anyone wanting to bring in animals had to get permission from the Animal Health section of the Ministry of Agriculture. It would entail filling out a form with the dog’s age, breed and proof of a clean bill of health.
The police and the Customs and Trade Administration will be ensuring that the ban is enforced, Kaieteur News has been told.
However, while a few proponents of the ban on Pit Bulls yesterday acknowledged that it was a move in the right direction, it was argued that it would not solve the problem as many persons breed the dogs for a living with puppies selling for as much as $60,000 each.
So while the doors have been closed at the ports, the availability of the dogs is not really under threat, one dog lover explained.
There were several calls for Government to ban the Pit Bull breed after a number of attacks which left a security guard dead and another man severely mauled.
In April, the security guard, Charles Roopchand, was on his way to work when he was attacked and had his throat bitten open. A female jogger, Desiree London, sustained severe injuries to her hands and feet as a result of the attack which occurred on the Ogle Airstrip Access Road, East Coast Demerara.
A week before that attack, the owner of one of the vicious canines was attacked by his own animal and received five stitches for wounds he sustained.
A few months ago, several persons were bitten when an irate Tucville woman unleashed her Pit Bulls on a group of young men. The woman was placed before the court and has since offered compensation to the victims.
And last year, an early morning jogger was mauled by several Pit Bulls in the North Ruimveldt area.
So severe were his injuries that he has had to seek overseas medical attention.
Recently, vicious dogs, which reportedly included a Pit Bull, attacked a man in the Queenstown area almost scalping him.
