The protest action by minibus operators planned for yesterday at the Square of the Revolution failed to materialise, with no sign of such a gathering at the designated area.
In the Stabroek Market area, few of the Route 41 (Guyhoc/South) and Route 46 (Stabroek/Lodge) drivers and conductors were working. The minibuses were not in their new park (the parking area inside of Stabroek Market Square), but their drivers and conductors were sourcing, loading and off-loading their passengers on Croal Street near to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The President of the Guyana Minibus Association, Lylon Weithers, who planned the protest, said that the reason for the lack of participation was because some of the minibus drivers had taken to using the park that was provided for them inside the parking area of the Stabroek Market Square. Weithers noted that some of the minibus drivers along Route 41 had been arrested earlier in the morning and had been released on bail.
A Route 46 minibus driver said that he had noticed a number of buses being lodged at the Brickdam Police Station. According to him, these minibuses were taken to Brickdam for stopping on South Road to load or off-load passengers.
However, a senior member of the Guyana Police Force denied the allegation. He said that there were no minibuses being held at Brickdam.
There seemed to be a shortage of minibuses along Route 41and there were quite a few passengers left stranded with no way to get to work or school. Many were forced to make the trek on foot, while others took taxis and some piled into already overloaded minibuses.
When questioned as to why the new park, provided by the Ministry of Public Works, was not being utilized the response given was that the new park, “… is stress,” and as noted by a conductor, people are not aware of its location.
However, by the later part of the morning, a lone minibus was noticed in the designated park, its driver and conductor desperately trying to source passengers. As the day lengthened, more buses slowly took to their new park.
It seems that the Ministry’s plan to bring some sort of regulation to the Stabroek Market has, to some extent, worked. The minibuses are, for the time being, adapting to their new parks, albeit slowly.
It is unknown whether or not these changes will be permanently accepted by the minibuses or they will again plan to strike and protest.
