Police have detained a postmaster from an East Coast Demerara Post Office who was caught stealing stone earmarked for road construction.
The man was held on Saturday night after he was caught red-handed loading several bags of stone into his car.
According to reports, an employee of the construction company contracted to do the road at Block CC, Mon Repos had overheard someone attempting to sell stone and was suspicious that the stone was being stolen from the construction site.
On Saturday night the employee staked out the area, and he did not have to wait long before he noticed the postmaster drive up in his car.
The employee observed the man and two other persons begin loading the stone into the vehicle, and he immediately contacted the Police.
When investigators arrived, they witnessed the man about to load the last bag of stone into his car, in which his wife was sitting keeping watch.
He was told of the offence, and was subsequently arrested.
Kaieteur News understands that the postmaster begged Police to give him a chance, claiming that he could lose his job if the story got out.
The Police did not budge, but promptly took him to the Beterverwagting Police Station.
He could appear in court as early as today.
