The Day was Mother’s Day but the event was a specially arranged meet by the Continental Cycle Club (CCC) and sponsored by a number of Cycling Enthusiasts and entities.
And yet again Alonzo Graves proved his superiority to his rivals, despite not being 100% fit, he pedaled to a convincing win in the 50-mile race which started outside the Plaisance Community Centre proceeded to Half Way Tree on the upper East Coast before returning to the starting point for the finish.
Once again the CCC member proved he is in a class of his own when it comes to sprinting as he powered to the line ahead of Roraima Bikers Club John Charles, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson, Tony Simon, Jaikarran Sukhai, Robin Persaud, Junior Niles, Linden Blackman, Christopher Holder and Chris Persaud in that order.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport after the win Greaves said that it was a hard race for him since he was not feeling very well but he persevered knowing that if he sticks with the front runners he can out sprint them at the end.
After the start of the race, Greaves, Niles and Simon separated themselves from the pack establishing a handsome lead which was nullified when the pack connected with them just around the Unity area.
But they were able to sit in and pace themselves nicely before making another break on the downward journey (Greaves, Charles, Simon & Sukhai).
Greaves was too good for his rivals as he again took the top position to follow up his first place finish in the Indian arrival Day Bico Ice Cream sponsored 50-miler on the West Demerara.
He believes that the victories will serve him well in this weekends National Sports Commission 3-stage race which will see stiffer competition coming from a number of overseas based riders including former national and Caribbean champions Godfrey Pollydore and his teammates from Anguilla who are already here.
Capturing the junior category was Christopher Holder with Chris Persaud and Enzo Matthews taking 2nd and 3rd.
The top three positions in the upright category went to Jamal Bentley, Kester Croal and Kelvin Johnson in that order. Aubrey Springer was the top over-50 rider with Compton Persaud and Monty Parris, Walter Isaacs and Anthony Fariah following. Jackson led among the under-50’s with Linden Blackman 2nd and Berbician Gary Benjamin 3rd.
After the big guns were through, it was the turn for the BMX riders to showcase their talent and that they did in fine style. Raymond Perez, a star for the future as was expected, dominated his peers in the 6-9 one lap race ahead of Crystal Blackman and Kareem Mc Lean. Anthony Freeman Jr. won among the 9-12’s with Teon Joseph and Andrew Monic 2nd and 3rd.
Jason Pollydore led from start to finish to win the 12-14 (3-lap) racing cycles event and was followed to the line by Ryan Bhagwandin, Naiomi Singh being the top female.
The open BMX match up which also saw the young riders going for 3-laps produced an impressive win for Ozia Mcaulay over Kunta McKenzie, Asif Shaw, Russell Humphrey and Kevin Edwards. The little strong man, Raymond Perez, despite being the smallest rider, once again showed that he has the aptitude to match pedals with the bigger boys as he went the full distance.
The organisers are expressing thanks to the National Sports Commission and National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohammed for their support in brining off the event which was accident free.
They are also expressing thanks to the Guyana Police Force Traffic ranks whose expertise ensured a smooth and easy flow of events.
All the above named riders were recipients of cash incentives which were made through donations from Becks Trading Company, Seeta Shop, Christopher Williams, Max Adams, Rackim, Gemma Williams, Neil Fraser and the Freeman, Bunbury and Perez families.
