(Kaieteur News) – Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali should know better by now. He should stay away from media entities like CNN. CNN is not NCN, it asks the hard questions, the kind that puts leaders on a spot. The questions that have meaning for citizens are where does Guyana stand in U.S. schemes? How much control the U.S. government has over the Guyana Government? How does that influence Guyana’s positions, especially as they relate to the oil and gas sector? And where does that leave Guyana, now loaded with wealth?
To his credit, President Ali did not go down quickly. He tried his usual moves, but found that his answers left him more exposed than protected. To his disfavour, he did not look too good with the answers that he shared in response to CNN’s Jim Sciutto’s questions.
“I don’t see the U.S. as trying to force us, or trying to be a dominant force with Guyana.” Then, President Ali owes the nation an explanation. Why is it that when the U.S. voices a wish, that wish transforms into a command to be obeyed? Why is the PPP/C Government, as led by Ali himself, so fearful of the U.S.? Why does it go out of the way to ensure that whatever the U.S. has in mind is fulfilled without any delay? There is the ugly matter that involved Cuban medical personnel. There is that matter that concerned Third Country Nationals, better known as deportees that the U.S. had no wish to be among its peoples. There is that matter brewing, where a US-based firm, Lindsayca, is running out of money. The reports are of the U.S. Embassy pushing for it to get US$102M more, so that it could move on with the US$2B Wales Gas-to-Energy project. Millions that the PPP/C Government is reportedly balking at handing over.
President Ali said to CNN that “I don’t see the U.S. as trying to force us…”. So, who forced the Guyana Government to force out the Cubans? Who could have been so barbarous, and who could have been so subservient, to decide that the group of Cuban medical personnel present in Guyana had to go back to Cuba? Cubans have been among Guyana’s longest lasting friends. Friends when times were bad. Friends when Guyana did not have the abundance of wealth that it does now. Yet, the Cubans had to leave, and left involuntarily, because their welcome had runout in a suddenly ungrateful and offensive Guyana. They had to go and it was not of their own free will.
We at this paper do not believe that the PPP/C Government, that President Ali himself, wanted the Cubans to go back to an uncertain life in their homeland. So, if not the Guyana Government, then who is responsible for them not being here in the numbers of before, and with the hospitality of before? It is not the Cuban government. It is not a CARICOM member country. It is not India or China. So, who was the driving force behind the expulsion of Cubans in a sad mass of hopeless people? President Ali said that “I don’t see the U.S. as trying to force us…” The issue before all citizens of this Republic is what else their president doesn’t see, or prefers not to see.
Guyana’s president was not at his best before a large audience, as he proceeded to dig a larger and deeper hole for himself. “I don’t see the U.S…trying to be a dominant force with Guyana.” Not trying to be the dominant force, President Ali said. He may think that he succeeded in pulling the wool over the eyes of his viewers. Guyana’s president could not have been more wrong and in a very embarrassing way. So, why has the U.S. been so insistent in applying pressure on Guyana, for there to be less of a Chinese presence here? China is a U.S. competitor. China is a superpower. Pressure Guyana to pushout China, and there is only one dominant force left inside Guyana, and with a PPP/C Government that is eating out of the U.S. hand.
When President Ali engages in these exercises of his, he publishes his weaknesses, drags down this country.
