(Kaieteur News) – It is not every day that a 28-year-old Guyanese girl gets to meet the King but for Kelly Hyles, an ambitious and driven young scholar, this dream became a reality on October 13, 2026.
Hyles, a Harvard Graduate and medical student that was born and raised in Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, was invited to London on October 13 where she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Trust 100 Young Leaders Award.
Hyles was recognised by the royal family for her work within her non-profit organisation, Gears for Success, and her dedication to increasing access to educational opportunities for students in underserved communities across Guyana.

Guyanese scholar, Kelly Hyles met with King Charles in London on October 14 after receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Trust 100 Young Leaders Award
“I’m incredibly honoured to have received the Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Trust 100 Young Leaders Award,” she told Kaieteur News. “Being recognised for the work I have dedicated so much of my time and energy to is incredibly validating, and it means a lot to know that this work is making a difference. It was a tremendous honour to travel to London to receive the award and to have the opportunity to meet King Charles,” the young woman added.
She said she engaged in a brief conversation with the King on his upcoming visit to her home country and the work she has been doing in Guyana. She described the meeting with the King on October 14 as “exciting”- a truly historic moment to share her efforts and the impact the organisation hopes to continue making.
“We spoke briefly about my work in Guyana and his upcoming visit to the country. It was exciting to share a little about what we’ve been working on and the impact we hope to continue making,” Hyles said.
Hyles started Gears for Success in 2017. The organisation aims to expand access to quality education for students in underserved communities in Guyana by providing essential learning resources, hands-on STEM programming, and long-term mentorship.
She said, “I’m especially excited about the next chapter for Gears for Success. My team and I are currently working tirelessly to organize a major national STEM fair planned for December 2026. We’re really excited about what we have in store, and we’ll be sharing more details very soon!”
The young lady currently resides in the United States, where she is pursuing a dual degree at Stanford University: MD at Stanford School of Medicine and MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She graduated from the Graduate School of Business in June 2026, just four months ago, and is now in her final year of medical school. She shared plans to apply into General Surgery residency. In 2016, Hyles received international recognition for her exceptional college acceptances, having been accepted to 21 US universities, including all eight ivy league colleges.
