(Kaieteur News) – The Government is planning to spend an additional $370.8 million to supply and install electrical works, air-conditioning units and networking cables at Guyana Water Inc.’s (GWI) Corporate Complex at Houston, along the Mandela–Eccles Highway, East Bank Demerara.
The proposed expenditure comes after some $562 million was awarded for the construction of the complex, which is intended to consolidate the operations of the state-owned water company currently housed in separate buildings.
The latest development was disclosed in during a recent opening of bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, which revealed that five bidders have submitted bids for the Guyana Water Inc. project.
GWI had gone out to tender for the “Design, Supply, Installation & Testing of Electrical Works, Air Conditioning Units & Networking Cables at GWI’s Corporate Complex” a project estimated to cost $370,800,000.
Those who bid are: Consol – $230,860,000; MEP Engineering Services Inc – $116,530,742; MEPequip Inc (Option 1) – $161,672,190, (Option 2) – $182,296,338; Supergraphics – $326,000,000; and Digital Design Construction, Logistics & Supplies – $206,663,699.
Kaieteur News understands that the $562 million project was awarded to Kares Engineering Inc under the then Ministry of Housing and Water, headed by Minister Collin Croal. It was reported previously that the proposed design of the office building caters for three floors of a total of 16,875 sq. ft. to accommodate some 111 staff of various departments.
The proposed design includes all office spaces for: Hinter Development, Human Resource Department, Water Resource Unit, Projects Department, ICT Support Unit, Cooperate Service, CEO Secretariat, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Public Relations Unit, Business Development Unit, Public Relations Department, Audit Department, Visitors waiting room, washroom facilities, Conference Room, Printing Room, Driver’s Room, Electrical Room, kitchen, storage.
Back in March 2024 during a visit to the project site, Minister Croal stated the new headquarters is expected to amalgamate staff from the company who are currently housed in four separate office buildings.
It was reported at the time that the Water company is currently renting four (4) buildings in Georgetown, which puts a financial strain on the company. With the completion of this new complex, this issue will be alleviated as there will be adequate accommodation for 111 staff from 3 of the locations while staff from the fourth location (GWI Lab) would move to Shelterbelt Compound.
