(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys glad to hear de news that road accidents down by 19 per cent. That is good news, especially in Guyana, where some drivers does treat de public road like is qualifying round for Formula One.
But dem boys gat one small question: How we get de 19 per cent?
Dem boys nah think it gat to do with better enforcement. But if it is enforcement, dem police must be doing it very quietly, because dem boys hardly seeing them when some motorist decide that speed limit is merely a suggestion.
Speeding still rampant. You could drive from Georgetown to West Demerara and see motorists passing each other like dem got an appointment with destiny. Parts of the West Demerara Public Road, West Coast Berbice and Corentyne public roads still gat long, long, stretches where overhead speed radars are not to be seen. And where some cars does drive like if dem at South Dakota Circuit.
But if we want reduce more fender benders further, we should put in more sleeping policemen. Dem boys always admire these fellows because, unlike some of dem human ones, they never sleeping when motorists approaching. Put one at certain junction and suddenly every driver remember that brakes does actually work. Yet, strangely enough, dem sleeping policemen not multiplying as fast as the potholes.
We still gat heavily tinted vehicles and some of dem driving around with sirens blaring like dem preparing for a state funeral, presidential motorcade and ambulance emergency all at the same time. Dem boys have a simple suggestion. Police should establish an online reporting system where members of the public could enter the registration number of any vehicle using a siren. Police then check whether that vehicle is actually authorised to use one.
And while dem at it, create an app where citizens could upload video footage of motorists breaking the law. Speeding. Overtaking dangerously. Running red lights. Driving while using the road like a personal race track. If de footage show the offence, de camera does become witness, de registration number does become exhibit, and de driver does become defendant. Nineteen per cent reduction is something to celebrate. But dem boys seh: let we not just reduce accidents. Let we increase the chances of catching the people causing them.
Talk half. Leff half.
