(Kaieteur News) – It always pointed in one direction, just had to be. The latest from a government that has no answers is the temporary solution of another Turkish powerboat. We need electricity from anywhere we can get it. It may not be improper to assert at any price that has to be paid. In order that some level of relief arrives for energy hungry consumers. They range from the homes of families to the businesses of entrepreneurs. It evidences how desperate citizens are in this blackout saturated oil rich country.

Absorb the frequency and length at which blackouts have been occurring. They just could not be allowed to continue. Even an entity as callous and negligent as the PPP/C Government dared not risk fooling around too long. It was too punishing on locals, and too infuriating to foreign newcomers. Another Turkish powerboat was always in the schemes of the PPP/C Government, since the environment it created demanded a solution, and there is only one currently. Another emergency powerboat arrangement to come onstream as quickly as possible. When circumstances are this demanding, then emergency procurement measures become the only choice. Create a problem, create a solution, create the opening, probably, for more potential corruption. Sole sourcing is the only option that gets the job done. A neat setup to deal with an electricity disaster in a hurry, and through efforts to avoid the hearts of citizens turning from the PPP/C Government. At least, it puts a pause to the ugly, embarrassing media headlines that make Guyana the laughingstock of the world.

Supporters and critics of the PPP/C leadership, starting with the president, can argue as much as it is pleasing to them about the presence or lack of intelligent planning at the GPL Inc. Or, an excess of ignorance and something close to criminal negligence at senior levels of the PPP/C Government. It is guaranteed that the negatives would carry the day, since those have considerable basis in fact. But not one of those arguments makes a light bulb go on, or one fridge hum quietly with life, and preserve costly food reserves. The bottom line is that already energy-starved citizens have been pounded into the ground by a rolling series of blackouts. Blackouts that last hours at a time. Blackouts that return older citizens to the dark days of load shedding. In the stifling heat and humidity that spread across most hours, day and night, citizens have been letdown yet again. We join with others in pointing the finger at a negligent PPP/C Government that only listens and responds when conditions reach a crisis state. A crisis state that is directly traceable to a government that could not light a candle and keep it going, if both the candle and match were handed to it.

When the circumstances reached to this fevered pitch, it was inevitable. Now it is drop everything, hurry up and get going, and get the Turks to rush here to plug the demand and supply gap. The Minister of Public Utilities knew all along where he was coming from, when he assured citizens of enough electricity for the Christmas Holidays now closing in. A bigger Turkish powerboat being recruited on an emergency basis, with emergency procurement measures set in motion. The PPP/C Government and the Turks seem to understand each other well, understand what the other needs to move matters along, regardless of the difficulties in the environment. Truth be told, Guyana’s electricity hardships and distresses are tailormade to push through a deal, that is sure to unleash a whole new stream of disagreements when its terms come to light.

The Turks are into business, and like any good businesspeople, they have to recognise their opportunity. They are in the driver’s seat. They determine the direction and rates at which additional power supplies are delivered to citizens driven to madness by the constant blackouts. Whatever the outcome, it is always this country and its citizens who pay the heavy prices. The PPP/C Government has shown that it is not beyond capitalising during a crisis. Emergency electricity from a Turkish company has that written all over it. Citizens obtain some relief, but the price is likely to be high.
