(Kaieteur News) – Global banking giant Citi has officially inaugurated its new representative office in Guyana, signalling its commitment to the country’s economic development and growing integration with international financial markets.

The inauguration was held at a reception on Monday evening at the residence of Nicole D. Theriot, United States Ambassador to Guyana and CARICOM. The event was attended by President Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and brought together key leaders from Guyana and the region’s public and private sectors to commemorate Citi’s formal entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

The inauguration solidifies Citi’s strategy of becoming the preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs by providing on-the-ground support in Guyana, the bank said in a release. The new office will connect clients to Citi’s global network and provide financial expertise to support Guyana’s infrastructure and development projects. “Guyana is emerging as one of the most dynamic markets in the region, creating significant opportunities for businesses, investors and institutions. With dedicated local coverage and Citi’s unparalleled global network, we are well positioned to support our clients as they expand, attract investment and participate in the country’s economic transformation,” said Ernesto Torres Cantú, Head of International at Citi.

“We are proud to establish a stronger presence in Guyana and to partner with our clients as they help shape the country’s future,” he added. The Government of Guyana welcomed the inauguration as a key milestone in the country’s development and integration with the global financial system.

President Ali described Citi’s arrival as a sign of growing international confidence in Guyana’s economy.

“The official inauguration of Citi’s office in Guyana is a powerful symbol of the growing international confidence in our country’s economic stewardship,” President Ali said.

“This event signifies more than just the opening of an office. It marks the opening of a door. A door between Guyana and the entire international financial architecture. A door through which capital can flow, ideas can travel, partnerships can be built, and opportunities can be created,” he said.

Citi also expressed appreciation to the Government of Guyana and the country’s financial authorities, including Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and the Public Service, and Dr. Gobin Ganga, Governor of the Bank of Guyana, for their engagement and support as the bank establishes its presence in Guyana.
