Temporary timber jetty being constructed at Parika Stelling for heavier trucks
(Kaieteur News) – To safely accommodate the loading of trucks exceeding 20 tonnes onto roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels at Parika Stelling, Region Three, the Ministry of Public Works is currently constructing a temporary diversion timber jetty there.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, on Friday inspected ongoing works at the Parika Stelling, where a temporary diversion timber jetty is being constructed and integrated with the existing wharf infrastructure.

According to information provided by the minister, the construction of the diversion route became necessary after structural deficiencies were identified in the existing timber jetty, resulting in the imposition of a load restriction. “This intervention forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to provide a safe and practical solution for truck operators while supporting the restoration of normal operations along the Parika–Supenaam route,” he stated.
This publication understands that the scope of works also includes preparing and upgrading the tarmac on the southern side of the jetty to facilitate the safe manoeuvring, staging and loading of heavier trucks. The rolling out of these projects follows a recent meeting convened by Minister Ramraj with truck operators in Region Two, during which concerns were raised regarding the reduced allowable truck tonnage and its impact on the transportation of goods and commercial operations.

“With construction advancing, the Ministry is working to address these concerns while ensuring that the necessary infrastructure and safety measures are in place to accommodate heavier vehicles. The current phase of works is expected to be completed by next Monday,” the minister disclosed.
Kaieteur News reported that the Parika Stelling is undergoing a major upgrade where the government is building out a new port facility. It was reported that the new Parika Port Facility is an approximately $10.5 billion project being undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and is expected to be completed in 2029. Government said the project will transform the Parika stelling into a major regional hub for transportation and socioeconomic activities and enhance operational efficiency, prioritise safety and guarantee commuters’ comfort.
