CLARIFICATION
Kaieteur News wishes to clarify an article published on September 8, 2026, under the headline “Chinese contractor builds road around poles on new East Coast corridor.”
Following further clarification on the execution of the project, it has become clear that the presence of the utility poles within sections of the ongoing road works should not have been presented as a failure or shortcoming on the part of the Chinese contractor.
The contractor, China Railway First Group Co. Limited, has been carrying out the road construction works in accordance with the project’s ongoing implementation arrangements. The relocation of existing utility poles is a matter to be addressed by the relevant Guyanese authorities and utility agencies as the project progresses.
The temporary arrangement allows the contractor to continue construction while maintaining space for motorists, with the affected poles to be relocated by the responsible authorities as has been done at other sections of the project. Kaieteur News acknowledges that the original article did not sufficiently reflect this aspect of the project and may have unfairly placed responsibility on the contractor for an issue that falls outside its responsibility. Kaieteur News apologises for any inconvenience the article may have caused to the contractor.
