New tarmac for vendors at ‘E’ Field Sophia completed

(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works on Saturday announced that it has officially handed over a newly constructed tarmac in ‘E’ Field, Sophia, to vendors who ply their trade along the community’s main access road.

According to the ministry, the newly completed space accommodates 70 vendors and features two walkways and two parking areas, providing a more organised and convenient environment for both vendors and members of the public.

“The initiative is a major step towards the continuation of the road works along the main access road in ‘E’ Field, Sophia. The Ministry of Public Works remains committed to working alongside vendors, residents, and other stakeholders as we continue to deliver infrastructure that contributes to safer and more organised communities,” the ministry stated.

Kaieteur News reported back in April that Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill met with vendors operating along the corridor in the vicinity of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, who were being relocated to properly facilitate ongoing road works.

The Minister had convened the meeting to establish a clear and mutually beneficial path forward, ensuring that vendors’ economic activities would remain undisrupted as the critical road works continued.

At the time, Minister Edghill disclosed that a transparent lottery system would be used to allocate the new vending spaces, in order to guarantee fairness, with the Ministry offering additional transition support on a needs basis.

Kaieteur News reported that the relocation exercise is a necessary component of the broader infrastructural transformation taking place in the Sophia area. Dennis Street is currently undergoing a major upgrade from the Eastern Highway heading east to Red Road (also known as ‘E’ Field). This work is being carried out simultaneously with ongoing upgrades to the internal main access points for various fields, including B and C.

Upon completion, this major upgraded artery will feature two widened lanes, significantly improved drainage systems, and the complete rehabilitation of several bridges along the alignment.
