(Kaieteur News) – In communities like Byderabo Road, Bartica, where access to specialized educational support remains a challenge, Project New Nation (PNN) is making a meaningful difference in the lives of children experiencing literacy and learning challenges.
Through its Literacy Learning Programme, funded by the Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI), PNN is helping students develop essential reading and writing skills while building a strong foundation for long-term academic success. At the heart of PNN’s educational efforts, the programme provides targeted support designed to improve literacy outcomes and create greater opportunities for learning and personal growth.
The programme was developed in response to growing concerns about the number of children experiencing difficulties with reading, writing, comprehension, and communication skills, By offering individualized instruction and evidence-based literacy interventions, the programme helps students strengthen foundational skills, improve learning outcomes, and become more confident and engaged learners.
The youth-led, non-profit organization is driven by like-minded individuals committed to addressing the challenges faced by children, youth, women, and other vulnerable groups in rural communities. Through innovative educational programmes, social development initiatives, and capacity-building activities, the organization is empowering individuals and strengthening communities across Region 7 and beyond.
PNN’s long-term vision is to create a society where every young person has equitable access to quality education, opportunities, and the resources necessary to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities and Guyana’s long-term development.
“Project New Nation’s work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on ending poverty and hunger, promoting good health and well-being, ensuring quality education, and advancing gender equality,” said Magaiva Gonsalves, Founder and Executive Director of Project New Nation.
Currently, the programme serves 245 students across five communities and operates within one pilot school, primarily reaching underserved rural and riverain communities where specialized educational support is often unavailable.
Since its launch, the programme has achieved several significant milestones. Students identified with substantial literacy challenges have demonstrated measurable improvements in reading ability, classroom participation, and overall confidence. PNN has also developed customized literacy resources and intervention strategies that allow instruction to be adapted to individual learning styles and abilities.
Beyond the classroom, the initiative has strengthened collaboration among parents, educators, and community stakeholders, creating a supportive network focused on improving literacy outcomes. The programme has also increased awareness of the importance of early literacy intervention.
Despite these successes, programme coordinators acknowledge that challenges remain. Students often enter the programme with varying literacy levels, requiring individualized instruction and additional learning time. Limited access to books, educational materials, and technology continues to affect programme delivery, particularly in remote communities.
Attendance and consistency also present ongoing challenges, as transportation difficulties, family circumstances, and other social factors can impact students’ regular participation.
Nevertheless, Project New Nation remains committed to expanding its impact. Future plans include increasing the number of students served, strengthening partnerships with schools and education authorities, introducing additional digital learning tools, and enhancing monitoring and evaluation systems to better measure student progress and programme effectiveness.
The Literacy Learning Programme is one of several initiatives implemented by Project New Nation. Other flagship programmes include the PNN SPARRK Lab, which introduces children to science, programming, and robotics; the SheShines Foundation, which empowers women and girls through education, leadership, and advocacy; and the Community Eco Farming – Food Security Programme, which promotes sustainable agriculture, food security, and community resilience.
As PNN continues expanding its educational initiatives throughout Region Seven and into other underserved communities across Guyana, the organization aims to improve literacy outcomes, increase school engagement, and create greater educational opportunities for vulnerable learners. With the support of the Greater Guyana Initiative, programmes such as the Literacy Learning Programme will continue transforming lives and strengthening communities.
For many students, the programme represents far more than reading support—it is an opportunity to build confidence, unlock potential, and acquire the skills needed for lifelong learning and future success.
As Project New Nation often reminds its students and communities: “Anything worth having, takes time.” That philosophy continues to guide the organization’s commitment to transforming struggling readers into confident learners, capable leaders, and active contributors to Guyana’s future.
