Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Golf Association (GGA), in collaboration with the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) Physical Education Cohort 2024-26 successfully hosted Guyana’s first-ever Inter-Collegiate Golf Championship at Westside Golf Course on Saturday.
Dozens of students, lecturers, supporters, and golf enthusiasts gathered at the country’s premier public golf facility as teams from leading tertiary institutions competed for the inaugural championship title in an exciting afternoon of golf.
After three hours of intense. competition, CPCE emerged as the inaugural champions, with the University of Guyana securing second place and GTI finishing third.
In the individual competition, the top performers were: 1st Place Driving: Rayden Assanah (GTI);1st Place Chipping: Ryell Damon (UG);
1st Place Putting: Jeremiah Meyers (CPCE).
The championship marks a historic milestone as the first golf tournament ever staged at the tertiary education level in Guyana. The event was the result of more than a year of planning and coordination between Mr. Alque Stanley and Guyana Golf Association President Aleem Hussain, whose shared vision was to introduce competitive golf to Guyana’s college and university students.
Over the past five years, the Guyana Golf Association has transformed access to the sport by introducing golf to thousands of new and young players across the country. More than 60 percent of participants have been female, highlighting the program’s remarkable success in creating one of the region’s most inclusive sporting initiatives.
Speaking after the tournament, GGA President Aleem Hussain said: “Westside Golf Course is now the new home for beginners to learn the sport and participate in competitions. Its innovative layout, combined with a fantastic viewing gallery from our highly rated restaurant, creates a welcoming environment for everyone. Every day, dozens of people experience golf for the very first time, and seeing their excitement is what makes this entire endeavour worthwhile.”
The Guyana Golf Association expressed its sincere appreciation to its corporate partners whose continued investment has made the rapid expansion of golf in Guyana possible. Special thanks were extended to Comfort Sleep, Nexgen Golf Academy, Westside Golf Course, Royal Castle Guyana, Dave’s ER Small Engines, the Ministry of Education, Excel Guyana; Toolsie Persaud Ltd., Regal Stationery, Trophy Stall, Madewini Gardens Eco Resort and Party Castle for their invaluable support.
The Guyana Golf Association remains committed to expanding opportunities for golfers of all ages and looks forward to making the Inter-Collegiate Golf Championship an annual fixture on Guyana’s sporting calendar.
