Will we ever get it right with GPL?

(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys want know if Guyana and GPL trapped in one of dem soap operas where the story does go round and round but never reach an ending. Every year, people hear about modernisation, transformation, expansion, upgrades and investments, and every year, people still can’t get reliable current.
Dem boys remember when the APNU+AFC Government was in office and blackouts had become so scarce that some people start wondering if GPL had accidentally stumbled onto the secret of electricity. In fact, some generator importers must have been nervously checking their inventory and asking whether they would soon have to start selling lawn chairs and kitchen utensils instead.
Back then, when the current stayed on, people thought the country had finally turned a corner. Nowadays, however, it feels as if the corner turn back on us.
What got dem boys scratching dem heads is that Guyana now got more money than ever before. We hearing about billions in investments, power ships, new substations, upgraded transmission systems, and enough energy security plans to light up half the Caribbean.
Yet somehow the average citizen still getting surprise power outages with the regularity of a television commercial. It is almost as if the blackouts have signed a long-term employment contract with GPL and nobody can find the termination clause.
Dem boys seh GPL is beginning to sound like a student who keeps promising better results next term. Every report card comes with a lengthy explanation about future improvement while the parents staring at the same marks.
The irony is that every announcement about improving the power system does seem to be followed by another blackout. Some people now get nervous whenever they hear the words “major upgrade.” They start charging every device in the house and looking for the flashlight before the speech even finish.
Meanwhile, the power ships must be wondering what more they can do. Dem boys imagine them ships looking toward the shore and asking if the electricity reaching land by bicycle.
Of course, nobody denying that upgrading an entire national grid is complicated. But Guyanese are simple people when it comes to electricity. They judge success by one scientific measurement: whether the fan still turning.
The more things change at GPL, the more they seem to remain the same. And unless something fundamentally changes, Guyanese may soon have the most modern blackouts in the world—fully upgraded, technologically advanced, and arriving right on schedule.
