(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony on Monday announced the installation of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), the first ever machine in the public health system.
“The installation of the first MRI machine in the public healthcare system at Georgetown Public Hospital is now underway, bringing world-class diagnostic services within reach of every citizen, regardless of their ability to pay. This is what real investment in people looks like. We promised to modernise healthcare, and we are delivering, step by step, project by project, promise by promise,” the minister said via a Facebook post.
Back in June last year, Director of Medical and Professional Services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Dr. Navindranauth Rambaran said the hospital was expecting the machine.
He disclosed that the acquisition was part of the $2billion the hospital was investing in a new imaging and intervention suite.
“So let me give you just a few examples of what we can expect in the future. The Georgetown Public Hospital invested close to $2 billion in a new imaging and intervention suite. We’ll have the first MRI in the public healthcare system along with a new CT scanner for GPHC and a brand-new Cath lab, again, this is an investment of close to $2 billion, and it’s pretty unmatched for things we have done before,” he said at the time.
This publication reported last week that Minister Anthony announced the installation of a new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner for GPHC.
At GPHC, the minister mentioned that a total overhaul is underway to replace the old scanner with a state-of-the-art model. “This is being complemented by the construction of a new two-story diagnostic and surgical facility next to the Accident and Emergency Department, which will house an additional CT scanner, the hospital’s newest MRI machine, dedicated digital mammography suites, and advanced urology equipment for non-invasive stone treatments,” he added.
