(Kaieteur News) – With an allocation of $134 billion approved in the national budget this year for the Ministry of Health, the government is preparing to spend a portion of that money to build a neurological centre in Region Four.
This is according to an invitation for bids issued by the ministry, seeking contractors for the project. The advertisement states that bids are expected to open on July 9, 2026 at NPTAB.
Earlier this year, during the presentation of the national budget, it was announced that plans were underway for the construction of the National Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, which will provide specialised clinical care and long-term management of brain injuries such as stroke, head and spinal cord and neuro-muscular disorders.
Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh said that $1.1 billion was budgeted to build the centre along with a modern oncology department to provide a comprehensive patient-centred cancer care facility.
At the sod-turning ceremony for the Industry Polyclinic back in August last year, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said the projects form part of the government’s commitment to transforming the local health sector.
“While we are doing that, we also recognise that there is a challenge with persons who are hypertensive. Some of them might get complications that ended up with a stroke and so we are also working to build a national rehab centre for stroke patients,” Dr. Anthony said at the time.
“And so, maybe next two years or so, you would see that come to fruition. So, when we talk about a world class health care, we’re not paying lip service to this, what we are doing is investing. The government is investing to make sure that we can develop these types of facilities,” he added.
