(Kaieteur News) – A 45-year-old construction worker lost his life on Saturday after his motorcycle was struck by a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist along the Reliance Public Road on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two.

Dead is Satesh Persaud, better known as “Tony” Persaud, of Lot 87 Reliance Housing Scheme.

The fatal accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. when the motorcycle Persaud was riding collided with motor car PAB 8929.

Police said the driver of the car was taken into custody after a breathalyzer test allegedly found 48 micrograms of alcohol in his breath—12 micrograms above the legal limit. The vehicle has since been impounded as investigations continue.

According to preliminary investigations and CCTV footage reviewed by police, the car was travelling at a fast rate in the southern direction along the eastern side of the Reliance Public Road while Persaud was exiting an access road and attempting to cross the highway.

The vehicle slammed into the motorcycle, throwing Persaud approximately 50 feet from the point of impact.

He suffered severe head injuries and was picked up unconscious by public-spirited citizens, who rushed him to the Lima Regional Hospital. However, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The driver remains in police custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
