(Kaieteur News) – Our public roads are no longer safe for pedestrians and cyclists. They are getting struck down cycling, trying to cross our public roads and even when standing or walking on the said thoroughfares. The increasing number of pedestrians and cyclists falling victim to road traffic accidents on our main public roads serves as an alarming reminder that our roadways are no longer safe havens for these individuals.
The massive number of vehicles using our roadways and the speed with which some of motorists are driving all combine to make it dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. As the pace of life quickens, patience diminishes, and this impatience translates into dangerous driving. People are hurrying to get to their destination even though there is no need for speed. The adrenaline rush has become ingrained. People speed for no reason and when you are driving slowly, they pass you and look at you as if you are crazy.
The improvements in the roads have led many to be used as motor racing circuits. Even horse cart racing has switched to the East Coast Public Road on a Sunday morning. Sometimes you wonder whether we were not better off when there were potholes. At least, that forced drivers to go slowly. The simple law however is that with more vehicles using our roadways, public roads will no longer be safe to walk and ride on. In most metropolitan countries, walking and riding on the highways is prohibited. Guyana will soon have to follow suit if it is to stop the carnage.
