(Kaieteur News) – A We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament (MP) was on Wednesday arrested for allegedly abusing his reputed wife and four-year-old child in Moruca, Region One.
The MP has been identified as 31-year-old Deon La Cruz.
Reports are that La Cruz temporarily rendered the woman unconscious while also attacking the child.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) confirmed that LaCruz was arrested after the victim reported the alleged assault at the Acquero Police Station on Wednesday evening. Following the arrest, WIN in a statement Wednesday night, vowed “appropriate action” if the allegations against its MP are substantiated.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 17:00 hrs on Wednesday, 10th June, 2026, at the couple’s residence in the North West District. Investigators stated that an argument between LaCruz and his reputed wife escalated into a physical altercation.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly assaulted the four-year-old child. Police reports indicate that when the mother intervened to protect the child, LaCruz allegedly dealt her several blows and pushed her to the ground, causing her to strike her head and briefly lose consciousness.
The victim further alleged to investigators that the MP subsequently armed himself with a chopper and advanced toward her in a threatening manner, causing her to fear for her life. Following the report at the Acquero Police Station, she was escorted by ranks to seek medical attention.
Responding to the police statement, WIN acknowledged that LaCruz was in police custody and distanced itself from the MP’s alleged actions, emphasising a “zero-tolerance” policy for violence against women and children.
“Public office is a position of trust and carries with it a heightened responsibility to uphold the law and demonstrate respect for the dignity and safety of others,” the party statement read. “While the investigation is ongoing and the facts must be determined through the proper legal process, let there be no ambiguity about our values: violence has no place in our homes, our communities, or our politics.”
The party said that it supports a full, impartial, and professional investigation by the Guyana Police Force.
“Should these allegations be substantiated, the Party will not hesitate to take the appropriate action consistent with our principles and commitment to accountability,” the statement concluded.
