(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh some people does treat salary increase like if it is a relay race between them and bankruptcy. The minute dem get a raise, dem ain’t thinking about savings, investment or retirement. No sah. Dem thinking about a bigger television, a newer car, and a phone so expensive it need a guard service to protect it.
One man get a promotion last year. Before the ink dry on the letter, he gone and buy a SUV so big it look like he planning to invade a small country. Every month now, the bank taking back the promotion in installments. Dem boys seh the poor fellow earning twice as much but sleeping half as good.
Another fella used to catch minibus and was managing life decent. Then he start earning more and suddenly he “can’t be seen” in public transport. He now driving a vehicle with payments longer than a prison sentence. By the middle of the month, he eating one tennis roll and drinking pipe water till payday.
Dem boys seh some people does confuse looking wealthy with being wealthy. If you wearing brand-name clothes but your light bill hiding from you like a witness protection programme, you ain’t rich. You just fashionable and broke.
And then there are the people who upgrade everything except their common sense. Bigger house. Bigger loan. Bigger credit card debt. Bigger headache. One lady boast how she move from drinking instant coffee to imported Italian cappuccino. But when the landlord ask for rent, she suddenly become a tea drinker again. The real problem is that people believe wealth comes from earning more. Sometimes wealth comes from wanting less. A man making $200,000 and saving $50,000 could end up better off than a man making $1 million and spending $1.1 million trying to impress people who don’t even like he.
Some people does laugh at de man wah riding bicycle to wuk and wearing old clothes. But de same man done pay off fuh he house, send he children abroad and gat a good stash in de bank fiuh hard times. He nah eating in fancy restaurant and drinking in dem expensive bars. He does but he bottle and tek it home and drink. The truth is simple: if lifestyle grow faster than income, poverty just travelling first class.
Talk half. Leff half.
