(Kaieteur News) – Imagine we gat to go till England to learn about urban planning and sustainable development. Dem boys seh is like flying first class to learn how to boil rice when the pot right here on the fireside whole time.
Now don’t get dem boys wrong. Guyana gat planners. Plenty planners. Educated, certified, and well-versed in big-big words. But somehow, we planners does be more urbane than urban. Plenty style, little substance. And instead of promoting sustainability, dem boys seh some of them experts only sustaining problems.
Dem boys seh one time in England, London was a proper mess. Horse, cart, carriage, soot, smoke. Everything jam up. But then the English do a strange thing: they plan. Not plan like how we plan to plan, or form a committee to examine the planning of the plan. But actually, plan and execute. They build proper roads, sort out zoning, regulate how people move, and even decide where things should and should not be. Radical idea, right?
Story go that when London start choking on its own confusion, the authorities didn’t say, “leh we wait and see.” They say, “leh we fix this before it fix we.” And just so systems, structure, and a little discipline turn chaos into something that almost make sense.
Meanwhile, back home, one minute you feeling like you deh in Miami, next minute you feek like yuh deh in an obstacle course. And don’t talk about drainage. Water does gather faster than when people lining up fuh cash grant.
Dem boys seh the real comedy is that every problem already got a solution written down somewhere in a report, in a drawer, under a pile of dust labelled “urgent.” But implementing it? That part still waiting for clearance.
So imagine that England had to organize London, and here we are trying to learn how to organize. Dem boys seh at this rate, we gon soon need a study tour to learn how to use common sense.
Until then, keep yuh patience, mind yuh speed, and remember: in Guyana, development ain’t just sustainable. The problems are too.
Talk half. Leff half.
