(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh every time somebody in distress in Guyana, people does react like dem applying for a job as Minister of Sympathy. News come out that a lil child need urgent overseas treatment to save he life, and before yuh could blink, Facebook full up with experts, prophets and auditors.
First comment: “Prayers up!” Second comment: “God in control!” Third comment: folded hand emoji, crying face emoji, candle emoji.
Now dem boys seh prayer is good. Nobody nah knocking prayer. Pray till yuh knees crack if yuh want. But after yuh done pray, God ain’t tell yuh to lock yuh wallet and disappear. Is like some people believe Heaven got a direct wire transfer system and once enough emojis gather, the plane ticket gine pay itself.
Then come de next brigade: de Investigators. “What government doing?” “Why family nah get advance on de cash grant grant?” “Can’t dem use cash grant to pay for the child’s surgery?” “Where de Ministry of Health?”
By the time dem finish asking questions, the child still waiting, the mother still crying, and the fundraiser still empty like old rice pot after payday. Then come de Sympathy Society. “So sorry to hear.” “Sad situation.” “My heart breaks.”
Heart breaking is nice, but purse opening does help more.
Dem boys seh plenty people does love charity as long as it coming from somebody else pocket. If government help, dem clap. If businessman help, dem clap. If neighbour help, dem clap. But ask dem for five thousand dollars and suddenly inflation, exchange rate and cost of living become a testimony.
Look, no government can respond to all requests for help. Sometimes the quickest ambulance is the kindness of ordinary people. If ten thousand people give a lil something, miracles happen faster than long statements and questions.
Dem boys seh when somebody need help, pray yes. Ask questions later. But first, put yuh hand in yuh pocket. God does answer prayers plenty times through people who willing to help. So next time yuh type, “Praying,” make sure yuh fingers pass by the banking app too.
Because faith without good works is one thing. And sympathy without contribution is just cheap data.
Talk half. Leff half.
