Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Harpy Eagles overcame odds thrown by the Windwards Volcanoes in game 1, which enabled them to wrestle a victory from the clutches of their opponents while gathering momentum and form; as the two sides run it back from today when the second encounter bowls off at the Antigua Recreational Ground.
Guyana fought tooth and nail in order to clinch their 4-wicket win against the Volcanoes during the opening encounter a few days ago, but will be keen on fine-tuning a few areas as they go deeper into the tournament.
Familiarity will be playing a huge role in this somewhat bilateral battle this season due to the restructuring of the format; knowing the strengths and weaknesses of one’s opponent will play a huge role in the success of not only the defending champs but the other franchises.
Eagles Captain Tevin Imlach, opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Vice-Captain Matthew Nandu and wicket-keeper Kemol Savory, all stood tall during the first game but will need some additional help especially from Kevlon Anderson, who looked out of sorts in both innings; but remains a big player for the Eagles.
The Eagles have also confirmed fast-bowler Shamar Joseph for today’s game, further adding to the fire-power in the pace department which is currently spearheaded by Nial Smith, Isai Thorne and Keemo Paul.
Joseph, who has his workload monitored after his recent return from injury, will replace opener Raymond Perez who is out for a few weeks due to a shoulder injury he sustained during game one.
Fresh on a 10-wicket haul in the first match, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is slowly taking over the role of lead spinner despite the elder statesman and 1st class cricket’s leading wicket-taker in Veerasammy Permaul, who still continues to rake in scalps.
Windwards played their hearts out and almost won the first game after gaining the advantage with both bat and ball during various intervals of the previous encounter.
Ackeem Auguste missed a 1st innings ton by a handful of runs, but could look to reassess his approach, especially against Motie who caused some trouble before eventually claiming his wicket.
One huge plus for the Volcanoes is Sunil Ambris’ form, having scored an unbeaten 107 in the 2nd innings. His experience and class will play a role yet again, as players like Kavem Hodge, skipper Alick Athanaze and Shadrack Descarte and others find their groove with the bat.
Windwards managed to cause all sorts of problems with their bowling attack, as bowlers like Gilon Tyson will be looking to add to his first match 5-fer, while spinner Kenneth Dember and seamer Ryan John could also play key roles having carried the bowling alongside Tyson.
Both sides tapped into their experience and grit to ensure the first battle went down to the wire, but today’s round could belong to the team which did the most home-work, as it relates to ticking unchecked boxes in the strategic game-plan book.
Eagles have somewhat of a slight advantage due to the win but underestimating the Volcanoes who were inches away from a possible win; could result in a long-term tricky situation should they suffer an unnecessary defeat.
Also in today’s round, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force will be looking for another win when they play the Leewards Hurricanes at the Sir Viv Richardson stadium, while Jamaica Scorpions, at home play Barbados Pride at Sabina Park; all as part of today’s second round of 4-Day action.
