Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep disgust and sadness at the continued, callous abuse of dogs across Guyana. Almost daily, one hears stories or witnesses firsthand the brutal beating of animals, particularly dogs, on our streets and within our communities.
Guyana is a nation that prides itself on progress and hospitality, yet the treatment of our voiceless, faithful companions in many areas is a total contradiction. It is inhumane and unacceptable to see dogs beaten with sticks, stoned, or neglected to the point of skeletal emaciation. We should stop pretend this is normal.
The Animal Welfare Act of 2018 exists to protect animals, yet there seems to be a lack of enforcement. I urge the Guyana Police Force to take reports of animal cruelty seriously, and for the relevant authorities to prosecute those who commit these heinous acts. Furthermore, I call on my fellow Guyanese to treat our animals with compassion. Animal abuse is often a precursor to wider violence, and a civilized society must protect its vulnerable creatures.
Yours faithfully,
V. Persaud
