(Kaieteur News) – The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Wednesday urged citizens across Guyana to be on high alert as the heavy rains are expected to continue until Friday.
In an advisory via its Facebook page the commission said that “…the Hydrometeorological Service advises that rainfall with the potential for significant flooding is expected to continue over Guyana from Wednesday, 1st April to Friday, 3rd April, 2026.”
Members of the public are urged to take necessary precautions and avoid flood prone areas whenever possible and to exercise caution when driving or walking during the downpour, especially in areas where waters pool.
“Keep drains, trenches and waterways clear to reduce the risk of flooding. Secure important documents, household items and other valuables,” the CDC warned.
Due to soil already being saturated because of the continuous heavy rainfall, the risk of severe flooding in low lying and poorly drained areas has greatly increased. In addition, it said hilly or elevated communities may experience mudslides.
The weather is expected to be overcast and cloudy with frequent showers and thunderstorms expected throughout Regions1-5, southern parts of Region Six, Regions Seven and Nine.
Impacts expected are coastal flooding, drainage overflow and road inundation, agricultural and riverine flooding with the possibility of community isolation. Mining and hinterland access disruptions and transportation delays.
On the 30th March, CDC warned of possible flooding from heavy rainfall which was expected to intensify across Guyana from Sunday through Tuesday.
In that statement, the CDC said persistent rainfall could lead to significant flooding.
It said the government had deployed special teams, including engineers and technical personnel nationwide to monitor drainage infrastructure and ensure sluices, pumps, and canals are fully operational.
