(Kaieteur News) – A 28-year-old Corentyne fisherman who was unable to swim has been reported missing after falling overboard while preparing to head out to sea at Orealla over the weekend.
Avinash Alladin Dookie of No. 77 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was onboard a vessel with several crew members when the incident occurred. He reportedly fell into the water and disappeared.
His wife, Amrita Dookie, recalled their final conversation.
“Saturday around lunchtime I spoke with him. When we finished, he told me he would call back later. Around 5:30 pm, I got a call saying he had fallen overboard,” she told this publication on Monday.
Dookie, a father of four, has not been seen since. While fears grow that he may have drowned, his wife remains hopeful.
“I believe my husband is alive. He is holding on to something,” she said.
His cousin, Haresh Dookie, said the family was informed of the incident Saturday evening.
“I got a call around 7:20 pm from my aunt telling me what happened,” he explained.
According to information relayed by the boat’s captain, the crew had been preparing to venture further out to sea after the tide when Dookie bent over to adjust the engine and fell into the water.
Family members were told he surfaced briefly several times before disappearing.
Search efforts have been ongoing since Saturday, and a report has been made to the police.
It was also confirmed that Dookie was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Relatives noted that he had been working at sea for approximately seven years.
His family is now appealing to the public for any information that may assist in locating him.

This is suspicious.
Dookie, not the Captain, bent over to adjust the engine ?
Was Dookie operating the engine, instead of the captain ?
In a boat moving on water, not wearing a life-jacket ?
