Kaieteur News – What was expected to be a routine paper committal hearing took an unexpected turn after the main accused in the Regent Street gas station bombing case confessed to committing the act and claimed he acted alone.
He also indicated his willingness to cooperate with the prosecution in an effort to bring the matter to a swift conclusion.
The development unfolded during proceedings at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
The accused, 33-year-old Venezuelan national Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, who is charged with committing an act of terrorism, allegedly used an explosive device at the Mobil Fuel Station on October 26, 2025 with the intent to threaten Guyana’s sovereignty and security, or to instill fear among the population.
The incident also resulted in the death of a six-year-old child.
During the hearing, Poedemo indicated, through a translator, that he had already spoken with his attorneys and is prepared to admit to his actions. He further stated that he is willing to cooperate fully with both the prosecution and the court to have the matter concluded as quickly as possible. He maintained that he acted alone and that the other accused individuals are innocent.
When questioned by the magistrate, the translator relayed that Poedemo wishes to “finish off the matter as quickly as possible” so that those he claims are innocent can be released.
Asked what course he intended to take, Poedemo responded through the translator that he wants to “admit everything,” confirming his involvement. He also indicated that he received the explosive device from Venezuela and “did what he had to do.”
As a result of these developments, the case will now be reviewed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, who is expected to determine the next course of action.
The matter has been adjourned to April 20.
The other accused in the matter are 44-year-old Venezuelan Alexander Bettancourt, Venezuelan national Krystal LaCruz, Guyanese taxi driver Johnny Boodram, Wayne Correia, 44, Ramesh Pramdeo, and Jennifer Rodriguez.
